#002 - A SECOND LIFE

A Second Life

There’s a quiet satisfaction in working with what already exists.

In our search to make Twig more sustainable, we’ve begun to explore deadstock fabrics. In July, I visited a showroom in Paris which enables independent brands like ours to access such fabrics. These beautiful, unused textiles were originally produced for luxury houses in France and we are now able to give them a chance at a second life.

When choosing a roll, you can see precisely how much water and carbon have been conserved through reuse. For instance, one deadstock fabric generates only 0.053 kg of CO₂ compared to 4.9 kg if it were to be newly produced – a clear illustration of how small choices can make a significant impact.

Choosing deadstock, however, means embracing certain limitations. These are end-of-line materials: once they’re gone, they’re gone. We’ve found this constraint surprisingly liberating, encouraging us to design with greater purpose.

For our new design, ‘The Tessa’, we have chosen three shades that blend seamlessly with the twig palette. As with our other designs, the intelligent fit with the drape detail allows for maximum comfort as well as effortless style.

Although these fabrics have man-made elements, our circular fashion  conscience is much better knowing these textiles would otherwise be in landfill.

‘The Tessa’ will be launched at our Melbourne pop-up in November, and on our website next year. Reusing what already exists feels purposeful, and is central to twig’s mission. It encourages us to create thoughtfully and to value materials already in the world.
